Low cost security metal detectors for schools and small businesses
Buying a metal detector for security applications such as checking that a person is not carrying a knife or weapon, etc. can be a bit of a nightmare, given the shear range of products flooding into the market to satisfy the needs of clients facing the high profile issue of knife crime in the UK.
Most of us understand that if there is a large price difference between two apparently similar poducts, there is normally a reason! …and when it comes to security metal detectors that is certainly currently the case - so Buyer Beware!
Which type of metal detector would best suit you?
Obviously if you will need to scan a high volume of people in a short time, it is likely that you should be considering a walkthrough metal detector arch of the type commonly used at airports, etc. and as a rough budget guide, the cost will be between £1,800 and £7,000 depending on the level of sophistication you require.
Where you need to scan fewer people, or you have more time in which to do it, hand held security metal detectors could offer a lower cost alternative, where the typical price range for a quality unit is £100 to £300, and with budget units on offer from around £35.00.
Choosing a Hand Held Metal Detector;
The best advice is to buy from a reputable supplier, as not only will they be able to help you choose the most appropriate unit for your application, but will also offer you a guarantee with the product.
Beware - there are many dubious “Rip off copy” metal detectors flooding into the UK. Typically these are copies of professional models produced by a handful of top quality metal detector manufacturers (some copies even feature the name and markings of the original unit), however, having evaluated several such units, the similarity is very definitely only skin deep.
Whilst the advertised selling price of these Rip off copy detectors initially looks attractive, shoddy manufacturing, the use of substandard or inferior internal components and circuitry, combined with the fact that all such units employ very old analogue technology makes them a very poor choice.
Short operational life before failure (and disposal as such units are non repairable), combined with very high battery drain, tends to make these units a very poor investment financially as often the lifetime cost of ownership is many times that of a quality unit!
Checking for weapons, etc, is an area where erratic performance is simply not acceptable - a detector that doesn’t always detect, is obviously more of a liability than a security tool!

UK Knife Crime Facts
Knife Crime in the UK
Confusing and often contradictory crime statistics produced by the two major UK crime surveys may not give a clear picture of the scale of knife crime in the UK, but with almost daily news reports of another murder or serious knife attack, it’s hardly surprising that the public are concerned. Recent initiatives by UK police forces, transport police and ports and airports involving among other things, the use of metal detectors for screening people to detect hidden weapons, etc. are to be applauded, but you could be forgiven if you believe that the problem is yet to be solved. The link below is a carefully compiled summary of related information from a variety of sources. Whilst the authors have consciously chosen to desist from recording each fatal incident as it hits the news, we believe that
· if you have any interest in the issue of knife crime or gun crime,
· or would like guidance on what’s legal and what’s not,
· or to how you can protect yourself against the risk
you will find it a mine of valuable information…
